South of Athabasca and north of Lloydminster, Alberta’s Cold Lake oil sands region proves especially attractive to industry. The area’s Lower Cretaceous bitumen/heavy oil deposits are of a higher quality than the province’s other two oil sands regions. Why this is the case and the many positive implications for industry pursuing thermal in situ and cold (primary) projects in the region are discussed.
