Examination of drilling licences issued in the four Western Canada provinces gives insight into what direction the Oil and Gas Industry is going. While drilling activity recovered slightly after the 2008 crash, it has been in decline the past two years. Likewise, the percentage of licences issued for vertical wells continues to decrease as the industry focuses more on developing resource plays with horizontal wells. Oil sands / heavy oil areas dominate drilling activity, while the Deep Basin received the most land sale attention.
